The form of the cajón is directly influenced by the circumstances in which it emerged. 

Afro-Peruvian slaves made them from shipping crates, a way of disguising their drum from the Spanish colonists, as a stool. The drum has developed in design over the past 150 years to include a snare, sound hole and various other innovations and is now a staple in Peruvian, Cuban and Flamenco music.
